Maxim Nazarov's Latest Album, Weaponized Autism, Delivers Belgian New Beat and Techno with a Gloomy Yet Fun Twist

In case you were wondering, “weaponized autism” is actually a thing. It’s the internet’s delightful term for someone who’s so obsessively focused, they turn their unique skills into an unstoppable force of godlike genius. Maxim Nazarov clearly gets it — and his new album, Weaponized Autism, is proof that being weird, obsessive, and just a little off-center is exactly how you make an album that slaps hard enough to leave you questioning your life choices, all while teleporting you to the early 1990s and making you dance.

Packed with Belgian New Beat and early techno flavours, Weaponized Autism is the sonic equivalent of wearing your least comfortable pair of shoes for a 12 hour nightclub marathon — strange, unsettling, but somehow, in its own messed-up way, fun. The album is nothing short of a dark, trippy exploration of distorted rhythms and glitchy synths. The track Pariah, featuring POKO COX on the vocals, hits hard with its infectious energy and menacing undertones, as if the world’s been turned upside down. Other vocal features include AVEC's master lyricist and resident DJ Feel Gainsbourg, as well as the mysterious Simulacra Esperanto and newcomer Paranoid Purple.

Maxim Nazarov is no stranger to the weird and wonderful world of experimental electronic music. As one of the masterminds behind the Moscow-based AVEC record label, alongside his long-term accomplice Alien Delon, Maxim’s career is a labyrinthine journey through every corner of the electronic music universe. From pop to EBM, Italo Disco to Happy Hardcore and beyond....

Maxim's journey started in Moscow, where he was heavily influenced by the club scene and radio station 106.8 FM. After relocating to NYC in the late ‘90s, he dove headfirst into vinyl collecting, DJing at underground Brooklyn parties, and eventually making his debut at London’s infamous Trade nightclub by the ripe age of 17. From there, it was one bizarre success after another, including being an A&R for AeroCCCP Recordings and contributing to runway soundtracks for fashion designers, writing music for advertising and contemporary art installations, proving that his creative reach knows no boundaries. Weaponized Autism is the culmination of years spent in the trenches of electronic music production — and if you thought you knew what to expect from Maxim, think again.
